How to Substitute Tomato Paste for Tomato Sauce: Tomato Paste to Sauce

Tomato sauce is a staple choice for most food lovers. But, What if you see your sauce can or bottle is out of tomato sauce and you need it right now? No worries, tomato paste can be the best substitute for tomato sauce same as tomato soup.

You might familiar with tomato paste and keep a homemade or store-bought 6-ounce can of tomato paste in your pantry or fridge. If you are not familiar with tomato paste till now, let me tell you what tomato paste actually is.

 It is made by cooking the ripe tomatoes for several hours, removing thin skins and seeds by straining and boiling the liquid again to make it the thickest and most concentrated form than puree and sauce.

Though, the making process of tomato puree and tomato paste is the same. Tomato puree is less thick and less sweet and most acidic than tomato paste.

If you want to make tomato paste from tomato puree, maintain the ratio of 1:3 meaning to make one cup of tomato paste, use three cups of tomato puree.

  • Take a saucepan.
  •  Put three cups of tomato puree into a saucepan.
  • Cook the purees and reduce the water content until they get thicker and concentrated in one cup.

Earlier we said tomato paste is a concentrated version of tomato puree. It is much thicker than tomato sauce.

To make tomato paste, tomato puree is cooked until all water contents are evaporated from it and seeds and thin skin is strained out.

On the other hand, tomato sauce is also made from tomato puree but is less thick than tomato paste but a bit thicker than tomato juice.

Tomato sauce is seasoned with oil, vinegar, onion, garlic, herbs, spices, etc more than tomato paste to increase flavor.

People usually use tomato sauce in the base of soups and stews and when they eat pasta, spaghetti or lasagna fried chicken, french fries, pizza, fried fish, and different types of snacks.

On the flip side, tomato paste is usually used in various recipes to enhance the thick texture and intense flavor of cooked recipes.

You can substitute tomato paste for tomato sauce. To carry out the substitution process, dilute the thicker tomato paste with water and then use it to substitute for tomato sauce.

You might not get the real taste of the tomato sauce that you make at home fresh. You have to season it with spices, herbs, olive oil, sugar, and many other seasoning ingredients to get a real tomato sauce flavor.

8 oz tomato sauce from the paste

 To make one cup of tomato sauce or 8 oz of tomato sauce from tomato paste

, follow the process below substituting tomato paste for tomato sauce.

  1. Mix ¾ of tomato paste with 1 cup of water together in a bowl and stir them properly with a spoon until well blended. To make the blending process quicker, you can use a blender but not mandatory.
  2.  Once well blended, season the mixture with spices ingredients, and oil to get the authentic texture and flavor of tomato sauce. To season it, cook the onion and garlic in olive oil until they get soft and easy to squeeze. Take some taste while cooking to maintain the consistency of the sauce. Add some more seasoning ingredients until getting real texture and flavor and stir with a spoon to mix the ingredients properly.
  3. Once you get authentic tomato sauce flavor, stop cooking and cool the sauce down.
  4. While the sauce is fully cooled, use it right away or pour them into a Mason jar and store it in the pantry or fridge for later use.

6 oz tomato paste to the sauce

You can substitute 6 ounces of tomato paste for sauce. 6 oz tomato paste is equal to ¾ cup. To substitute it for tomato sauce, follow the steps below-

  1. Add 1 cup of water with ¾ cup of tomato paste. You can add less water to get a bit thicker sauce.
  2. To enhance texture and flavor, season it with cooked garlic and onions in oil and sugar. Add more seasoning ingredients until getting an authentic tomato sauce taste. To make spaghetti sauce, you can add 1 tablespoon of basil, dried parsley, oregano, salt, and garlic powder each.

If you convert 6 ounces of tomato paste to tablespoons, you will get about 10 tablespoons of tomato paste. If you substitute 1 tablespoon of tomato paste for the sauce, you get 3 tablespoons of sauce. So, from 6 oz tomato paste, you get a total of 30 tablespoons of tomato sauce or 15 oz sauce.
